Real families look many different ways. PhenoTips captures consanguinity, LGBT+ individuals and relationships, adoption, donors, childfree couples, fertility status, pregnancy, pregnancy loss and termination, separation, and estrangements.

The user then creates a child of two male individuals in the pedigree who are already married and were previously childless, and then edits the child to indicate they were adopted into the family. Then the user creates a new partner for one of the proband’s great aunts and adds a child with the new partner who they edit to mark as miscarried, and then adds another child who they edit to mark as aborted. The pregnancies are marked with the sex of the children. On one relationship they mark the couple as separated which creates a double dashed line on their relationship line. Finally, the user clicks on the proband’s mother and checks the box “not in contact with the proband” which changes that relationship line to become dashed. The user then cycles through options for sex and gender separately, showing the various symbols that are created as a result, some marked by UAAB for those who are unassigned at birth, AIAB for those who are assigned intersex at birth, and AMAB for those assigned male at birth with a gender other than male, indicated by their pedigree symbol, and AFAB for those assigned female at birth with a gender other than female, indicated by their pedigree symbol.
